UK numerologist David Meade has declared an upcoming planetary alignment to be the sign of the so-called “rapture” some Christians believe will save them from disease, persecution and death at the hands of a one world government. When will this event happen? Monday April 23, 2018 a scant two weeks away.
Let’s be clear; nonsense!
On April 23, the sun and moon will be in Virgo, as will Jupiter, which represents the Messiah.
Experts at first dismissed this claim when they discovered this alignment happens every 12 years.”
These types of theories are nothing more than esoteric ephemera designed to obfuscate and confuse trusting people who do not know what the bible says, nor do they understand what the strict conditions of publishing a “prophesy” entail.
- 100% accuracy on every utterance in the name of God
- or “thus sayeth the Lord:…”
- death to false prophets
Those are very strict terms and conditions, wouldn’t you agree? For disciples of Messiah, they should serve as duct-tape over our mouths. These theories and proclamations amount to nothing more than Christian navel gazing. Wisdom, as we have discussed elsewhere on this site, is the right use of knowledge.
Is astronomy a bogus science, No. Do elements in space outside the earth’s atmosphere affect the planet? Yes, most certainly; without the Sun, there would be no life on this planet whatsoever. So why do people persist in these wacko predictions year after year? Pride.
The three temptations
The three temptations which most often trip is up are
- lust of the flesh
- lust of the eye
- pride of life
Ok great, what does that mean? Let us ask our old friend John the disciple, near the end of his life where having gained great wisdom, he ‘splains it to us like we are six…
1 Jn 2: 15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
What do we need to survive and be productive? Nutrition, air, shelter from the elements, water, clothing. These are the foundation elements in Maslow’s hierarchy of Human Need theory. Next layer includes safety and security. These form the foundation for human activity and without them, humans cannot survive. It is this author’s opinion; food, water shelter, clothing, safety, group belonging and meaningful activity form the foundation layer but let us not quibble. Where do humans run off the rails with these basic foundations?
Lust of the flesh
Hyper-focus or over-indulgence of any of these elemental needs derail humans from the very start. Every time this author goes out to the interwebs to find this example, someone has altered what Maslow’s illustration shows as “basic need” is to a greater or lesser degree. This morning one example was found with WIFI as the bottom or foundation row!
What are we saying; over eating, addictions, risky behavior and self-hatred all threaten human existence and chip away at the foundations. Lust of the flesh is feeding or relying on the satisfying of these physical demands to the detriment of our ability to interact with others and God.
Lust of the eyes
We in the modern age joke about squirrels & shiny things. If someone we know is easily distracted from the task at hand, we smirk and say “Squirrel!” If someone we know is always distracted by the latest trend or fad we say “Oooo…shiney!” This is what lust of the eyes is; the desire to have or control that which we see as attractive. The Ten Commandments speaks directly to this as coveting; the secret desire or action of mis-appropriating that which by right belongs to another. Does not matter to whom it belongs; father, brother, sister or God; it is not yours.
And what of Pride of life?
Ahhh, here is where things get complicated and require higher reasoning and critical thinking. A further look at Maslow’s theory; second from the top is something the artist labeled “esteem needs” with the first in the list being prestige. Esteem needs is very misleading; lets call it confidence needs. What we are getting at is; in order to accomplish goals beyond basic, one needs to have the ability to ask critical questions, plan for the answers, implement plans, correct mistakes and complete to the goal. Or close the sale, so to speak. When we are successful, our brain says to itself, “mark that” in memory so we can recall how we accomplished a goal. Our brain also says the same when we fail, in theory.
So pride of life involves a complex set of successful actions over time, resulting in value being accrued. What we value determines what we pursue. If we value our own accomplishments to the exclusion of God and others, we have sinned. Pride connotes, selfishness, greed, deception, theft and can lead to murder in pursuit of goals at worst. There is no one for one balance scale to this; if I steal from my neighbor but give generosly to the poor, it all works out. False! If I steal from my neighbor, I have hurt him and his family. If I give generously to the poor I hurt them by implicating them. If caught with my neighbor’s goods, they can be prosecuted and punished regardless of their complicity or what actually happens to me.
Pride of life boils down to me making all the rules and decisions without the humility to ask God what his desire is in any given situation. Practice this arrogance enough even in isolated areas of our lives, we allow sin to devour us.
What does this have to do with that numbers guy, anyway?
The numerologist David Meade is unknown specifically to this author. The practice is not. At one time many years ago, I developed a fascination with biblical code. There are whole message boards who do nothing else. They hammer away at scripture day and night looking for “secrets.” In effect they are looking to become the elite by way of esoteric knowledge in one area; scripture. This is a foolish waste of time. Those who ignore the truths of God sprinkled in plain sight, in favor of some hidden nugget, miss the will of God, completely.
I am not saying there are not delicious morsels of wonder in scripture, there are! However, they are treats or gifts or comforts if you will, given solely at the discretion of the Holy Spirit. They are not to be wrested from the numeric values of letters like a child grabbing a toy from her friend. The body of written word, what we call scripture is there for our spiritual nourishment, our comfort in perplexing times and as our Teacher of righteousness or right living before a Holy God.
Let me just close by saying this; spend Sunday or Saturday enjoying the beautiful tapestry God has maintained for us in a fallen, sad, corrupt world. Be thankful He is sustaining us to the very end. If He chooses to give you some insight or unravels a mystery for you, be joyful and share your joy. We will be waiting for you on Monday April 23, 2018 to tell us what you have experienced.
As for the so called “rapture” well scripture tells us no one knows the day or time our Messiah will appear, not He at the time he said it, nor anyone else except the Father God, alone. Look it up; there is a link to an online bible below.
And for those of you demanding in your own head where jn14 stands; I am a pan-tribulationist.
I do not see evidence that says disciples will escape persecution, torture and even death for their beliefs. I see the opposite in other countries and a creeping inclination here in the States. Pan-tribbers like to joke that it does not matter “when” it will all pan out in the end. This dark humor serves as comfort when we see what is happening to our brothers and sisters in other nations. We are not exempt in the West or as disciples, as scripture plainly teaches.
